tumblr post on legibility

It's all about Legibility
Allan Haley in an article for Fonts.com states that typographic clarity comes in two flavours: legibility and readability. Legibility is the function of the typeface design and is measured in how easy it is to distinguish one letter from another whereas readability is dependant on how the typeface is used (typography).
From looking into typeface design for dyslexic people I have began to think about how boring all typographic design would be if it was purely created for maximum legibility. The dyslexic typeface strips back type to its simplest form. Within design not all typefaces should be (or are) created with legibility as a primary design function therefore meaning they can be used to make a statement and creating a feeling to graphic communication design.
Haley states that the degree that a typeface has personality, spirit or distinction it almost always suffers proportionally on the legibility scale.
Within my typographic research essay project I want to look into two aspects of legibility; it’s effect on the cognitive mind for dyslexic people and ‘normal’ reading people and how necessary legibility is in typefaces for different graphic communication designs.
